Ancient Japanese meets modern Westlands...

Our current Year 9 pupils have been looking into, and experimenting with finishing techniques for wood. The technique we have been using this half term is shou sugi ban, which is the technique of burning wood. Through doing this the wood becomes more fire resistant, water repellent and has a much longer life span of approximately 90 years. Pupils have had the opportunity to use the tools for braising and setting fire to their projects!
After the wood has been burnt pupils use a wire brush which then defines the grain in the wood, and an oil to finish. The project we have been working on is wheelbarrow planters for the garden. The pupils have been very happy with the finished projects.
