Abbey Hill at North Shore News! 7RS trip to Kirkleatham Owl Centre
29th January 2017
On Tuesday 17th January, the students in 7RS went to Kirkleatham Owl Centre for a hands on educational experience. This visit was in line with our topic work, Predator! We have been learning all about animals, ecosystems, the food chain, predator and prey. We had a look around the bird aviaries first and had a chance to feed the rabbits and guinea pigs. A volunteer called Penny led a fantastic show and tell session which included a range of animals for the students to learn about and handle. We handled animals including bearded dragons, rats, snakes, tortoise, guinea pigs and a barn owl named Jeffrey!
After lunch we were given a flying display from the bird handler Craig. The bird we saw flying was a Caracara called Stanley. We learned about what they hunt to eat and about their behaviour in the wild.
Before we went home, we had chance to buy a souvenir to remind us of our trip. We would like to say a big thank you to the staff at Kirkleatham Owl Centre for a really fantastic visit.
